A great deal of Kolb’s theory is about the internal cognitive processes of the learner. Note that learning requires mastering abstract concepts that can be flexibly implemented in several circumstances. In Kolb’s theory, new experiences provide the basis for the creation of new ideas.

Kolb’s learning styles – matrix view. Thus, for example, a person with a dominant learning style of ‘doing’ rather than ‘watching’ the task, and ‘feeling’ rather than ‘thinking’ about the experience, will have a learning style which combines and represents those processes, namely an ‘Accommodating’ learning style, in Kolb’s terminology.

Kolb reflective cycle example. Perhaps the most effective way to demonstrate Kolb’s reflective model is to provide an example. In figure 4, an example of a nurse’s reflective cycle is presented. In the example, the nurse reflects on the ‘concrete experience’ of providing care to one of their patients who has dementia.

In 1984, David Kolb published his model of learning styles, from which he created his inventory of learning styles. That is called “Kolb’s Learning Cycle” “Learning is the process whereby knowledge is created through the transformation of experience” (Kolb, 1984, p. 38).
